MEET THE ASCEND PILATES TEAM

The Story of Ascend

Our founder, Christie Wang, had a vision to share the benefits and culture of Classical Pilates with the greater San Diego community.

She moved to San Diego in 2020, and quickly realized that classical Pilates was not as common as it was on the East Coast. After 9 years of working as a Pilates instructor in the fitness industry, Christie decided she wanted to create something of her own in San Diego to fill the gaps she saw in the fitness industry. During her career, she quickly realized there was nothing better than classical Pilates for optimal progress and results. Since opening Ascend PIlates in 2022, weโ€™ve cultivated an incredible community of people dedicated to the Classical Pilates method.

    Who created Pilates?

Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, began as a series of exercises designed to enhance physical strength, flexibility, and overall well-being. Joseph Pilates was born in 1883 and moved to the United States in the 1920s where he opened a studio in New York City.  His work gained popularity among the dance and arts community, and over time, the method spread to a broader audience. Originally called "Contrology," this exercise method creates long-lasting strength, flexibility, and balance in the body.

What is a Pilates workout like?

Pilates is a core-focused workout that values quality over quantity and emphasizes stretch, strength, and control in every movement. Each private class may utilize the Pilates Mat (bodyweight exercises) or the Pilates apparatus (Reformer, Chairs, Barrels, Cadillac, etc). Our semi-private classes are all performed either on the Pilates reformer or the Pilates tower. The Pilates apparatus are a variety of apparatuses that teach the body to utilize the appropriate muscles and provide spring resistance to push and reach against.

    Who is Pilates for?

The Pilates method can be adapted to all levels of physical fitness and serves as an excellent complement to any kind of athletic training. It enhances and refines movement patterns because exercises are performed across multiple planes of motion and with different types of spring resistance to challenge and lengthen the body.
